Where the zodiac comes from
The zodiac is roughly 2,500 years old, born in Babylon and refined by Greek, Egyptian, and later Arabic and Indian scholars. The word comes from the Greek zodiakos kyklos — "circle of animals" (though only some of the twelve are animals). Ancient astronomers divided the sun's annual path into twelve equal 30° segments, each named for the constellation sitting there at the time. The dates have drifted since — the constellations have shifted due to precession — but the traditional sign dates stuck.

Why do the descriptions feel so accurate?
Two honest reasons. First, the Barnum effect: the descriptions are written vaguely enough that anyone can see themselves in any of them ("you can be outgoing but also value alone time" — who isn't?). Second, confirmation bias: once you know you're a Virgo, you notice every organized thing you do and forget the messy ones. Psychologists have tested this repeatedly — people rate random sign descriptions as accurate just as often as their own.
